About twelvetrees

where it all began

Being the youngest of four boys it was inevitable that getting out of the house was a priority for my parents. Rugby started at the age of 4 and I never looked back, weekends were taken up by sport, football on Saturdays, cricket in the summer, it was non-stop, and we loved it. And as you can imagine the competitive streak was there! Some of my favourite memories were playing with my brothers, the combination of a ‘Twelvetrees’ back line, Joe, Matt and me at the Weald School in west Sussex, where my older brother Jonny played a few years before.

Age 17 I got the opportunity to play for Leicester Lions, which led to playing for the Tigers academy in a 7’s tournament. A year there and then signing for Bedford Blues in 08/09 season, a truly traditional club that helped develop me enormously as a player and a person. You have to grow up quick when you are in that environment!

2009-10 season saw me go back to Tigers where I spent three great seasons with some a truly expectational squad, the likes of Lewis Moody, Ben Kay, Toby Flood Aaron Mauger to name a few, were great to be around and learn from.

Age 22, 2012 and time for a change, and when another historic club like Gloucester are on the table it felt like the right place to be, and ten years later, I was right! That year was great for the club, and players, but particularly me as a gained my first cap for England against Scotland in 2013 six nations, a boyhood dream and something I never thought would happen. The journey quickly continued, and I was called up to the British & Irish Lions in Australia, something that I never expected and will never forget, a great tour!

I’m not sure where all those years have gone, it’s been full of many special memories, the good, bad and the ones that are locked away, which I am sure I will reflect on when the time comes. I am so proud to have represented Gloucester, the history, the fans, the players, the shed, to be part of all this makes me, and my family very privileged.

Outside of the game I am very lucky to be married to my wife Georgie, with our 4 children who have all grown up coming to Gloucester games. During the summer months and some breaks during the season we are always keen
to get down to the beach in South Devon and getting out on the water, fishing, paddle boarding and attempting
to surf.

To be awarded a testimonial at a club like Gloucester is truly overwhelming and exciting. The list of Gloucester legends that I follow is amazing and something I never thought would happen. I am deeply honored to be part of this special club for the last 10 years, which has been mine, and my family’s ‘holm’, with some great memories. Thank you to the committee for your amazing work in putting it together.

I look forward to celebrating this year with you and I hope to see you all soon – Billy
